Rachel, 20

My life / My World

My name is Rachel, and I'm 20 years old. Currently I'm in school for physiology, anthropology and psychology. My mom is a radiological technician and has really inspired me to be a doctor.
She used to take me to work with her when I was little, so I was exposed to the field of medicine at a young age. My dream is to help young kids with cancer and specialize in pediatrics oncology. When I'm not hitting the books I enjoy going out to eat with family and friends, cooking, dancing, modeling, and playing cards.

Q & A with Rachel

Q. What do you plan to achieve in your life?

A. I am currently preparing myself for a huge test next year called the MCATs - an 8 hour standardized test that will definitely determine my fate. If I succeed, medical school it is!

Q. What will you do if you don't pass the test?

A. News of such a disapointment would only put a kink in finding my destiny. In a short while, I would undoubtedly spotlight some other interest or avenue to venture. Although my college career is focused on the sciences, I have always loved to travel and discover new cultures. I speak Spanish (a second major) and perhaps I could even channel myself into the business world in such a way that I could combine the two.

Q. Have you done any traveling?

A. Considering I recently escaped my teens, I have traveled to such incredible places early in my life, and know that getting on a plane is better than any other high - it's intense, liberating and tomorrow is never the same as today. During the past four years I have visited friends and family throughout the U.S., down into Central America and in Europe. I whole heartedly encourage all young women to take any opportunity to travel. It will be a life-changing experience.

Q. How do you keep all of your commitments in balance?

A. To be completely honest about it, my system fails me from time to time - whether I'm stuck in a situation at school I cannot get away from to see my family or, alternately, school takes a back seat - I take life as it comes to me, trying to deal with the turbulence of time, but ultimately giving in to that higher power.

Q. What is your strongest belief?

A. Self-confidence can get you anywhere so long as you let it work as your engine and not as your ego. Work hard for your goals girls! Don't be afraid of challenge or defeat - they may give you scars, but as my eldest brother always assured me after one Saturday moring scuffle, "Rachel don't worry - scars build character." Thanks, bro. Rachel ~
