Wake Up Frankie
Wake Up Frankie's story began in 1999, when Spiegel asked my mom
to design some bed ensembles for children. She wanted to come up
with designs kids would really love, so she asked my opinion. I
was twelve years old at the time and had some really clever ideas
that were unlike anything being sold at the time. I suggested using
tulle with glitter for a little girl's ballerina bed and space-age
silver metalic trimming on a planet pattern for boys. When we took
the unique designs to Spiegel, Bed Bath and Beyond, Stroud's and
Mervyns's. The new bedding was a huge success!
Later that year, I wanted to redecorate my room in a more teen-like
fashion. I discovered there was very little decorative bedding offered
in stores for teens! So I decided to design my own bedding. It was
wild, vibrant colors and crazy, unusual fabrics inspired by the
home decor industry. When my friends saw my new room they went wild!
Everyone loved it! We were thinking this crazy look for teens might
be as popular as the kids bedding! With me at the helm, we designed
a collection of six more teen bedding ensembles. We took them on
the road to show retailers in New York City. The crowds gathered
at the showings, everyone in the corporate ladder stopped in to
see the exciting new collection. The buyers asked us if they could
